When will we learn?

Woman stabbed to death in St. Louis Park because of Domestic Assault charges were still being filed and the suspect was NOT held in jail! ALL police officers say that Domestic violence cases are the most dangerous cases to respond to. And, research has proven time and time again that anyone who needs to have a restraining order against a person has very high chance of NOT surviving the year! They are also very likely to die before the court case. Also, case after case has proven that divorces where one spouse has an attachment disorder usually ends with murder, of the person who initiated the divorce.  Why are these people given the chance to murder?

Jails are full and Judges aren't too eager to put people in them for simple domestic violence or a simple argument. Judges still rule as if they think that almost ALL domestic violence cases could be cured by a simple Argument management course. Please! Let's face the music! A mother of 3 children was murdered by ex-husband (divorce was just finalized). He had attachment issues. The children are now orphans, for all practical purposes. A father in jail is not a father in ones life, especially, if they are in jail for the murder of the spouse. I just pray that the children get good counseling for PTSD and Abandonment issues or they might end up a child abuser, like someone I know (who has changed for the better).

If I ran the government, Jails and laws would change.

1} We'd have the following types of "prisons".
a) Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment centers whereby its a 2 year sentence with 24/7/365 hour treatment and behavior therapy. They would also learn how to deal with conflicts and issues. I would put first time offense of DWI/DUI for 2 years, then have the 3rd year require they attend treatment for 2 hours 5 days a week. I would require drug/alcohol tests every day. The 4th year, treatment is lessened to 3 days a week with drug/alcohol tests 3 times a week. Failure of a test one time would automatically get them in jail for 5 years of full 24 hour treatment. A 2nd time offense, I'd do the above but it would be 5 years - 7 years, unless they injured someone, which would automatically give them a 15 year sentence. Also, if they were close to 2x or more the limit, even on a first offense, I would automatically have them in treatment for 15 years. This treatment would include extensive therapy. Life coaching to learn how to deal with issues and conflicts. They would get Dialectical Behavioral Therapy as well as learn how to live a good and healthy life without drugs and alcohol. They would learn how to raise their self-esteem. Also, the reason behind their drug abuse would be found and dealt with in an appropriate manner.

b) Murderers Treatment centers whereby their sentence would be a minimum of 20 years or longer if they are not being successful in treatment. And they would have 24/7/365 behavioral therapy coupled with Dialetical Behavior Therapy and other treatment methods to help them learn how to deal with anger and other issues. They would learn to deal with what caused them to be on the wrong side of the law. They would learn how to be a productive citizen and would learn right from wrong. Anyone found to not be able to learn right from wrong because their brain is simply not wired that way, will have their sentence changed to a life sentence. This is because these people will not change and will kill again.

c) Mentally Ill Treatment centers. This is for those who did a crime but have a mental illness. These people need psychiatrists and special therapy that is specifically designed for the particular DSM-IV disorder they have. They would be in prison for a minimum of 5 years UNLESS they have severe paranoid schizophrenia or severe bipolar 1 or severe Schizo-affective disorder or some other severe disorder and have been proven to be very violent and at risk of going off their meds. I would actually keep these people in the center for 20 years. Scott Tweed I would put in the center for life because he has proven to go off meds and to be a danger to society. Also, if such a person commits a hate crime, I'd give them a life sentence in this facility, if Mentally Ill.

In all cases, I would have the psychiatrist and all the behavioral therapist meet together with a judge and the incarcerated's lawyer to discuss the case and see how the treatment is coming and when the person should realistically be released. Also, a release plan would be drawn and ALL people released will be released into a special half-way house where by they continue 24/7/365 behavioral therapy and will have their own behavioral therapist/job coach that helps them find and keep a job. This coach would work beside them at their job for a minimum of 6 months depending on what the client needs. This can be extended for 3 - 6 months at a time. And, for those who have communication issues, I'd help them learn a new skill where by they can be their own boss and work for themselves with an online business if possible.

How realistic is this? Not very because it would be very expensive. However, we would have LESS people in the long run in Jail because they would be less likely to rescitivate. If we were to require Religion that is NOT Muslim, Wicca and Satanism, then we would have on average, 80% that would not rescitivate, if pass statistics that have held true for years, continue to hold true. Muslims, Wiccan and Satanism converters have a 100% rescitivation rate. I find this very odd! You would think that Muslims would have better odds than this.

What causes people to do crime in the first place? Lack of jobs, lack of moral values, mental illness - especially undiagnosed mental illness, poor training on how to deal with issues and problems that life throws at them, poor training in how to deal with anger issues, and peer pressure. Low self-esteem also plays a part. Low self-esteem can lead one to do drugs or drink excessively.

About me and this post:
I graduated with a degree in Social Science. My concentrates were in Sociology and Criminal Justice. My professors were very good and very knowledgeable. One professor actually works directly with troubled teens. I also have the opportunity to talk with a Champlin at a jail and he confirmed the statistics that were taught us in class. A prison in Florida and the Champlin in Minnesota had the exact same statistics with who rescitivates and who doesn't - right down to the exact religions! I found this quite fascinating as usually you will find some differences in various regions because of cultural influences.
